A Guide to Recommended Arabian Publications.

Do you wish to learn more about the horses featured on this website? Do you want to learn more about the magnificent Arabian horse?

Here is a bibliography containing the many quality books and magazines which we recommend to all. Some are still in print however most can only be purchased second hand either via on-line book stores, or via EBay.

General Arabian Horse Publications.

"The Classic Arabian Horse", by Judith Forbis.

Comments: While this book has a pretty predictable slant towards the Egyptian Arabian, this book is hard to go past for its quality. The author's knowledge of the Arabian horse & its history are unsurpassed, and her ability to present the information means you will keep going back to this book as a reference for years to come. The book comes up for sale on EBay regularly and can be obtained for a reasonable price (we paid about $20 + postage for ours... but anything under $50 is money well spent).

The Arabian Horse in Australia & New Zealand Vol 1

Comments: This book is quite rightly a collectors item not just because it is scarce, but because its contents provide a priceless snapshot of the Arabian breed in about 1980- a time when influences were changing & many of the influences of today were just making the presence felt. The editors created a book that covered the history of the breed extremely well while also providing coverage of the contemporary. Photography was world class- as one expect from Hawley et al. This book comes up on EBay regularly but competition for them can still be fierce. Prices range from $100 up to $200+ depending on competition.

The Arabian Horse in Australia Vol 2 to 6.

Comments: Vol 3 to 6 are still available from the Arabian Horse Society and are remarkably cheap for what they contain. To be able to buy a book of this quality for $15 (Vol 3) is a bargain. The quality of these books vary and we have found the (past) editors' committment to accuracy to be sometimes lacking. Still, the books are worth purchasing & belong in any Arabian enthusiast's library.

Crabbet Reference Books

The Crabbet Silver Family in Australia" by Coralie Gordon

Published in 1987, this book is THE reference for anyone serious about researching the Crabbet Silver family in Australia. It is a book comprising well written commentary, significant use of progeny tables for researchers of families and individuals, and a large collection of photographs (mostly supplied by the horse owners so quality does vary). This book is still keenly sought after and comes up on EBay not all that regularly. Price can vary a lot from $60-70 up into the $200+ range. It is worth buying by anyone who loves this family of horses and wishes to have the important information at hand.
